The Ocean Shores Art Expo Story
….from Historic Bridge to Art Expo

The Ocean Shores Arts Expo began in 2004 when a group of residents who had come together during the Pacific Highway planning controversy decided to create something uplifting, creative and positive for the community. Lions of Brunswick/Mullumbimby straight away supported the project as a worthy cultural event to bring community together, and provided funding and many willing hands to help.

One of many effects of the new highway project was that the old historic bridge over the Brunswick River would be replaced by a super highway. The art competition therefore invited artists to depict the old Highway bridge spanning the Brunswick River at Ocean Shores, so at least paintings could keep that bit of history alive.

Themes over the ensuing years focused on significant local issues and interests. In 2005 it was “The Brunswick River”, 2006 was “Colours of our Valley”, 2007 turned our attention to “The Environment – Our Place, Our Face”. In 2008 the year of the national apology the theme was “Belonging”. In 2009 the theme was “Seeds of Change” and in 2010 "The Elements", now in 2011 we have choosen "Life's Surprises" as a theme.

All are welcome to the Opening Night at 7 pm Friday at the Ocean Shores Primary School to view art and sculpture, listen to local musicians and enjoy drinks and nibbles. Then over the weekend there are local musicians performing, art demonstrations, the Youth art show, a community artwork, and the Artists’ café will be open and in addition this year we will have an expended series of sessions by the school P and C group.

Local history has been an important corner stone of the Expo every year and our local historian Frank Mills will again this year be involved.

The Art Expo have over the years enjoyed great sponsorship and donations from many local businesses and individuals. Now making its mark in the Northern Rivers Region, it is a unique and innovative cultural experience. We hope you can come!
